Calendar 2010

15.11.2010 International Workshop on Small Scale Wind Energy for Developing Countries.

The wind energy technologies can provide sources of unlimited, cheap and clean energy to the people in developing countries. Especially, communities in remote and dry regions, which do not have easy access to the hydro power, and can not afford the installation of long transmission lines or using solar photovoltaic power, could benefit from the wider use of wind energy.
The Workshop will bring together specialists in the area of small scale wind energiy from different countries, to discuss the application of wind energy technologies, reliability of wind turbines, strength of used materials, case studies and perspectives of application of wind energy in developing countries.
This Workshop is the follow- up to the international workshops on Natural and Low–Cost Materials in Wind Energy Technologies (Dhulikhel, Nepal, November 10-12, 2008), and on Small Scale Wind Energy for Developing Countries (Nairobi, Kenya, September 14-16, 2009).

13.09.2010 Makes extreme weather climate change worse than we think?.

Risø DTU is 13 - 15 September 2010 hosting the first annual meeting of the EU supported research project CARBO-Extreme. About 60 researchers from EU, USA and Switzerland will meet at Risø DTU to discuss their latest findings on how strongly extreme weather events affects the European CO2 balance. New evidence suggests that extreme weather influences the atmospheres CO2 balance dramatically, which in turn may exacerbate climate change.

06.09.2010 31th Risø International Symposium on Materials Science: Challenges in materials science and possibilities in 3D and 4D characterization techniques.

The present day sees a global effort to develop new and advanced materials. As an integral part of this endeavor a range of new characterization techniques are becoming available, which have led to significant breakthroughs in materials science and engineering. Within this broad scientific field this Risø symposium will focus on metallic materials and on 3D and 4D characterization techniques using x-rays, neutrons and electrons. These techniques now allow characterization on a finer and finer scale and open up the analysis of dynamic behavior by real time in-situ investigations. This means that techniques are now available by which key challenges in materials science can be addressed. Such problems are for example evolution in structure and properties under: mechanical loading, thermal annealing, phase transformations and fracture/damage.

06.09.2010 Validation and Process Control for Electron Beam Sterilization.

25.07.2010 The 13th International Workshop on Targetry and Target Chemistry.

12.07.2010 Workshop on Autonomous Aerial Sensors for Wind Power Meteorology.

The background is that we got funding for a project looking at the applicability of small UAVs (two small planes, a helicopter plus a tethered lighter-than-air system) to be used as wind sensors to be freely placed anywhere in a wind farm, and/or to fly on given trajectories in any specified height and direction through a wind farm. The main aim of this workshop is to come with input to plan flight week at (hopefully) the Danish Test Station for Large Wind Turbines at Høvsøre.
Which scientific or technical problems can we solve with the new tools? And how do we use them best for our purposes?

06.07.2010 Workshop on Solid oxide cell electrodes in 3D.

The one day symposium is part of an international workshop on the topic. A series of invited presentations will be given, focusing primarily on the use of focused ion beam (FIB) tomography for collecting 3D microstructural datasets of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and the reconstruction and quantitative analysis of electrode structures with a view to predictive modelling. Although most results will pertain to SOFCs, the scope of the meeting is general to porous electrode structures. The bulk of work on 3D electrode structure that exists today has been performed by FIB tomography, however x-ray nanotomography is also emerging in the field and thus is also within the scope of the meeting. Presentations will be given by the leading academics in the field, FIB-SEM manufacturers and simulation software suppliers.

Dr. Lawrence Buja director for the National Center for Atmospheric Research will discuss exciting breakthroughs in climate research and new modeling capabilities aimed at providing improved information to decision makers. You are invited to join the seminar that takes place on June 4th here on Risø DTU at 1 p.m.

Climate change science for the IPCC AR5 has an increased focus on quantifying the effects of change on coupled human and natural systems to identify and evaluate strategies for managing change and its impacts.

This new research emphasis is designed to directly support policy and decision makers struggling to manage finite food, water and energy resources in the context of rising global population and GNP coupled with climate change and other environmental stresses.

Climate change scientists are developing new classes of climate models, scenarios and data distribution systems relevant for a much larger, more diverse community to enable the next round of IPCC assessments to tackle these societal questions.

Included in the discussion on the seminar will be:
• an overview of the new scenarios
• some preliminary results of the current IPCC AR5 climate simulations
• the enhancements made to the newest version of the U.S. Community Climate System Model (CCSM)
• development of a new Nested Regional Climate Model
• continuing improvements in the Earth System Grid (ESG),a global virtual data center designed to ensure open sharing of climate data among the global research community
