Aarhus University's Department of Environmental Science and Department of Ecoscience are located at Risø, along with the Danish Center for Environment and Energy (DCE).

The Department of Environmental Science conducts problem-oriented research and creates a foundation in ecological, chemical and physical relationships in the environment, as well as in economic, political and social conditions in the interaction between environment and society. The department also performs research-based public sector consultancy and provides research-based advice.

Professional expertise ranges from atmospheric chemistry and physics, to environmental chemistry, microbiology and biotechnology, to environmental economics, environmental geography, political science and sociology.

Research programs

The Department of Environmental Science works interdisciplinary with society's challenges. Here, chemists, microbiologists, atmospheric physicists, geographers, engineers, economists, sociologists and political scientists work closely together to contribute methods and knowledge to create sustainable development.
